During the several years that Joe Carvajal served as Executive Secretary to the
President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, he had occasion to
work with Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Head of the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation.
The Kennedy family was keenly interested in the welfare of the handicapped, and
Carvajal spent hours at Timberlawn, the Shriver family estate near Rockville,
Maryland, working with Mrs. Shriver on various projects. On one such working
visit, in 1964, as Joe and Eunice worked on the broad patio behind the main house
at Timberlawn, a very young Maria Shriver came riding up on her horse. She saw
that Carvajal had a Rolleiflex camera with him and asked if he'd like to come over
to the playground/swimming pool area to take some pictures of her with a couple of
the handicapped kids who happened to be visiting that day. Here are the photos
he shot that day. Neither Eunice or Maria have ever seen these pictures.
