Another of these photographs (see below), with the three actors identified by name,
is featured in the Recreation Chapter of this new history book.  The "earlier Charles
County," as the author calls it, was far better than "the current one."

Images of America: Charles County
by Jacqueline Zilliox
Review by Edna Troiano

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Jacqueline Zilliox's book "Images of
America: Charles County" makes a significant visual contribution to Southern
Maryland history. Images of America, a compilation of photographs taken between
the 1880s and the 1970s captioned with historical information, is divided into 10
chapters, each focusing on an aspect of Charles County history-"Towns and
Villages," "Industry," "Commerce," " Local Personalities," "Recreation," "Education,"
"Churches," "Events," "Fire and Rescue," and "Travel."

Zilliox was editor of the Charles County Historical Society's newsletter when Arcadia
Publishing approached the group. When the company expressed interest in
publishing the book, Zilliox knew the project was a natural for her because, as she
explained, "I love history and I love Charles County."

As Zilliox acquired photos from the archives of the Southern Maryland Studies
Center at the College of Southern Maryland and from local families, she also
gathered stories of the places and the people who shaped the county. Her original
purpose was to create a pictorial history of the county that might also foster tourism,
but as she talked with people and listened to their stories, she realized that she
"wanted the book to be a tribute to the common, everyday person who forged the
current Charles County."

According to Zilliox, responses from readers indicate that the book is resonating with
them and "galvanizing the community to take a walk together down memory lane."

Images of America tracks almost a century of Charles County history. If you have
roots in Southern Maryland, you'll reminisce about the places familiar to you-the
courthouse, Port Tobacco, Cobb Island, Marshall Hall-and the people whose names
are known throughout Southern Maryland-the Bowlings, Dents, Mitchells and
Mudds. If you're new to Charles County, you'll be astounded by the gap between
today's county, with its suburban atmosphere, strip-malls, and traffic jams, and the
county's simpler, more rural past. Whether you're a newcomer or a native resident,
you'll enjoy looking at these photos and pondering how the earlier Charles County
evolved into the current one.
