| The Alcoa Pioneer, a cargo freighter, was Captain Carvajal's first ship after the conclusion of World War II. It made regular runs from New Orleans to South America, taking U.S. manufactured goods outbound and returning with loads of bauxite ore for the Alcoa Aluminum Company. The bauxite was off-loaded in Mobile before the Pioneer returned to New Orleans to load up again. This photo was taken at the old Canal Street docks (later the site of the New Orleans World's Fair and now the New Orleans Riverwalk.) |
| The Alcoa Clipper, a passenger steamer/light-cargo freighter (complete with swimming pool, ballroom, two bars and other such amenities.) The Clipper sailed from New Orleans to Aruba, and on around to Rio, returning by way of the West Indies (Trinidad, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Cuba -- before Castro.) |
